Intelligent Environments (IEs) aims to empower users by enriching their experience, raising their awareness and enhancing their management of their surroundings. The term IE is used to describe the physical spaces where ICT and pervasive technologies are used to achieve specific objectives for the user and/or the environment. The growing IE community, from academia and practitioners, is working on the materialization of IEs driven by the latest technological developments and innovative ideas. This book presents the proceedings of the workshops held in conjunction with the 16th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE2020), Madrid, Spain, 20-23 July 2020. The conference focused on the development of advance intelligent environments, as well as newly emerging and rapidly evolving topics. The workshops included here emphasize multi-disciplinary and transverse aspects of IE, as well as cutting-edge topics: 10th International Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Healthcare and Well-being (WISHWell’20); 9th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE2020); 4th International Workshop on Legal Issues in Intelligent Environments (LIIE’20); 4th International Workshop on Intelligent Systems for Agriculture Production and Environment Protection (ISAPEP’20); 4th International Workshop on Citizen-Centric Smart Cities Services (CCSCS’20); 2nd International Workshop on Intelligent Environments and Buildings (IEB’20); 1st International Workshop on Research on Smart Grids and Related Applications (SGRA'20); 1st International Workshop on Open and Crowdsourced Location Data (ISOCLoD’20); 1st International Workshop on Social Media Analysis for Intelligent Environment (SMAIE’20). The proceedings contain contributions reflecting the latest research developments in IEs and related areas, focusing on stretching the borders of the current state of the art and contributing to an ever-increasing establishment of IEs in the real world. It will be of interest to all those whose work involves the design or application of Intelligent Environments.

The promises and realities of digital innovation have come to suffuse everything from city regions to astronomy, government to finance, art to medicine, politics to warfare, and from genetics to reality itself. Digital systems augmenting physical space, buildings, and communities occupy a special place in the evolutionary discourse about advanced technology. The two Intelligent Environments books edited by Peter Droege span a quarter of a century across this genre. The second volume, Intelligent Environments: Advanced Systems for a Healthy Planet, asks: how does civilization approach thinking systems, intelligent spatial models, design methods, and support structures designed for sustainability, in ways that could counteract challenges to terrestrial habitability? This book examines a range of baseline and benchmark practices but also unusual and even sublime endeavors across regions, currencies, infrastructure, architecture, transactive electricity, geodesign, net-positive planning, remote work, integrated transport, and artificial intelligence in understanding the most immediate spatial setting: the human body. The result of this quest is both highly informative and useful, but also critical. It opens windows on what must fast become a central and overarching existential focus in the face of anthropogenic planetary heating and other threats—and raises concomitant questions about direction, scope, and speed of that change. The volume uses a cross-disciplinary approach to exploring digitally enhanced, spatially relevant sustainability systems It critically queries the promise of information technologies and related support systems to help safeguard the habitability of the planet The new edition is fully updated and reorganized in thematically linked yet stand-alone chapters and is referenced to global bodies of knowledge for ease of discovery and access It includes copious images, maps, diagrams, and references to other media to enhance understanding

The term Intelligent Environments (IEs) refers to physical spaces in which information and communication technologies are interwoven with sensing technologies, innovative user interfaces, robotics and artificial intelligence to create interactive spaces which increase the awareness and enhance the experience of those occupying them. The growing IE community is rooted in academia, but increasingly involves practitioners. It explores the core ideas of IEs as well as the factors necessary to make them a reality, such as energy efficiency, the computational constraints of edge devices and privacy issues. This book presents papers from Workshops held during the 18th International Conference on Intelligent Environments, IE2022, held as a hybrid conference in Biarritz, France, from 20 to 23 June 2022. The conference is now recognized as a major annual venue in the field of IE. It offers a truly international forum for the exchange of information and ideas, and welcomes contributions from all technically active regions of the planet. Included here are 35 papers from the 1st International Workshop on Sentiment Analysis and Emotion Recognition for Social Robots (SENTIRobots’22); 1st International Workshop on Edge AI for Smart Agriculture (EAISA’22); 2nd International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Emerging Topics (ALLEGET’22); 11th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE’22); 2nd International Workshop on Self-Learning in Intelligent Environments (SeLIE’22); 5th Workshop on Citizen Centric Smart Cities Solutions (CCSCS’22); 11th International Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Healthcare and Well-being (WISHWell’22) Exploring some of the latest research and developments in the field, the book will be of interest to all those working with intelligent environments and its associated technologies.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) and indoor air pollution (IAP) are a matter of concern in many countries because they can significantly influence the general health and well-being of those who spend most of their time inside, whether at home or work. Poor IAQ and repeated exposure to dangerous concentrations of pollutants can contribute significantly to the healthcare burden along with increased absenteeism and lost productivity worldwide. This book, Indoor Air Quality Assessment for Smart Environments, explores the problem of IAQ and highlights potential challenges, gaps, and opportunities in the field. As the title suggests, it focuses on assessing IAQ in smart environments using emerging technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), that can further contribute to the development of intelligent building management systems. The book contains 8 chapters, written by various experts in the field and addressing significant elements of IAQ management, including: definition, state-of-the-art and applications; sensing techniques; technological interventions and smart environments; smart monitoring devices; green and smart hospitals; health risks of nano building products; the optimization of household ventilation; and an assessment of smart environments. While providing a useful source of knowledge for researchers, policymakers, public health professionals and government agencies wishing to enhance the air quality in buildings, the book will also serve as a guide to building occupants who wish to take the necessary measures to enhance the built environment with improved ventilation arrangements.
